Apple Trailers in Ubuntu 64-bit
Written on September 15, 2009
Honestly, I don’t know if this problem is 64-bit only, but since a few days or so I’ve been unable to watch Apple trailers in Ubuntu.
Anyways, this is a chronicle of things I’ve tried.
gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer: An eternal loop of a 16×16 or so white frame, and just blackness.
totem-mozilla: Tries to search for a decoder for “text/html” codec… Nothing.
mozilla-helix-player: Nothing. Just gives me an option to download or open the file. It’s 90 kb, so neither leads to anything useful.’
mozilla-plugin-vlc: Gives me a big black media player, and if I save the current page then it’s the same 90kb media file I looked at earlier.
The Theory: Apple has begun wrapping their movies in html or something. The 90kb file seems to be a binary, however, rather than a text file.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/themenwhostareatgoats/ is the one I’ve been trying to watch.
If you got any suggestions, please tell me in the comments.
